Operation FR was the despatch of escort ships to northern Russia which were to act as escorts for the first of the winter 1943 season convoys, Convoy RA 54A. Other participants were HNoMS Eglantine, HMS Harrier, HMS Matchless, HMS Milne, HMS Musketeer, HMS Saumarez, HMS Savage, HMS Scorpion, HMS Scourge, HMS Seagull, and HMS Westcott. Despite stubborn Norwegian resistance, and the landing of British and French troops in support in northern Norway, the Norwegian government agreed to an armistice on June 9. However, many German warships were sunk or damaged in this operation. The SS William Tyler Page was engaged in the Normandy landing operations when an L.S.T. Petard began operations in late July as part of the naval escort of the Middle East-bound Convoy WS 21, (via the Cape of Good Hope). Although the ship was fitted with radar, it was relatively primitive, so the need for a good visual watch was regarded as crucial. Wildcats were flown from HMS Chaser and it was thought that they had driven the Condor away, but it kept watch at a distance.
